CLAPA Annual Meeting August 15, 2020, 10:00 a.m. at the Woodbound Inn Tent
54 members in attendance.
Welcome from President Frank Battaglia.
Introduction of board members.
Weed control: Minimal regrowth of milfoil since 2018 treatment. A few plants found in Woodbound cove. AB Aquatics will return in August for another look. We spent $31,948.00 on treatment in 2018, $8,154.25 (diving only) in 2019, and will spend this year approximately $3,660.00 (diving only). In 2021 we will most likely treat the Woodbound cove area again. CLAPA encourages members to “weed watch”; mark or note the location of plants and email CLAPA with the information. The NH DES supports our weed control, paying 40% of our costs.
Water quality: VLAP (Voluntary Lake Assessment Program) sampled water in June and August. pH is just below desired level but not unusual. Phosphorus, which promotes vegetation growth, is high in a few spots but not a cause for concern according to NH DES.
Communications: Joan Lathrop has improved the website with lots of new information for members. Look for information from the NH Lakes Association and the Loon Preservation Committee.
Outreach: Membership is up from last year to about 110. With tiered membership structure, 68 out of 110 paid more than the base $55. There is a page on the website showing our business supporters.
Financial: Copies of info were made available. TD Bank: $10,818.28, Edward Jones: $97,567.77. We spent $3,163.84 in 2020 so far, with income of $15,990.06. Net income was $12,826.22.
Jaffrey DPW lowers the water level in the lake each fall, usually during the first week in November. This year lowering will begin October 25. Members are encouraged to clean up their beachfront while water level is low.
Algae seen in the lake now is normal and not hazardous. Water is very clean this year. Please report the bluegreen algae, which is toxic, if you see it.
Boating activity: many boaters (especially “guest boaters”) are not paying attention to rules, which are posted on the website. This is a safety concern. Overview of rules was read to members. Be especially conscious of speed rules when approaching other boats, docks, swimmers, etc. There is a sign at the public launch to help make the rules clear. Report safety violations (try to get photo and boat license number) to NH Marine Patrol (phone number on website). Call 911 to report any accidents.
Fundraising: Linda Harris designed CLAPA logo for new T-shirts and hooded sweatshirts. Crew-neck sweatshirts will be available soon. All of these can be purchased on our website.
History of the lake: An overview will be published on the website this week. Send updates and additions to Joan.
Lake host program: We need workers stationed at the public launch to monitor transient boats. Let Frank know if you are interested. Fishing tournaments are sponsored by NH Fish and Game. We will know in advance when tournaments are happening so that boats can be checked.
Many members are unhappy with the level of inconsiderate activity on the lake, especially by nonresidents. Suggestion to sell stickers to visitors to support CLAPA. The island is private property and should not be a base for all-day activity. No wake between the island and shore. Report infractions to NH Marine Patrol. Frank will talk to Marine Patrol to look at problem areas and to clarify boating rules.
Burnt wood decorations made by Candy Phillips, with lake themes, will be sold thru our website.
Slate of board of directors and officers was proposed, seconded, and approved as follows:
